Dear Mr. Mayor,

Greetings from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde!

By now you may have heard from our Dean of the School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies, Ms. Nicky Perez, regarding the U$1,000 donation which the De La Salle Alumni Association of Northern California earmarked for our Deaf students.

I would like to add my own words of appreciation for this generous donation. Truth to tell, I was very pleasantly surprised when Br. Kenneth handed me the check, especially since it was totally unexpected.

Dean Nicky may have already told you how your donation came at a time when it was badly needed, since some of our Deaf students were planning to stop their schooling due to lack of funds for transportation and other basic needs. The lifeline that they received through the alumni’s donation is indeed very welcome. As I told Dean Nicky, this was truly God’s Providence at work.

Thank you once again. May the Lord bless all of you for your generosity!

In Saints La Salle and Benilde,

Br. Victor Franco, FSC

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES

DATE: April 16, 2010

VENUE: Willie and Rose Salgado’s Residence

ATTENDEES (_x_) Matt Hizon	_x__ Nani Ramirez	___ Yollie Aquino	_x_ Emma Magbitang _x_ Art Dancel	_x_ Arnold Mercado _x_ Willie Salgado	_x_ Jojo Flores	___ Irvin Sevilla	_x_

Peachie Herman ___ Caloy Narciso	_x__

Guest: Jun Magbitang, Rina Hizon, Rose Salgado

Agenda approved via email

Christmas party:

Marriott, can accommodate up to 500 guests, but our target audience is about 350. Cost is $43++ (tax and gratuity) roughly $50 per head. $85 at 250 tickets to break even. Yo will use her credit card for mileage and will add credited mileage from last year to pay for Joey Albert’s room. She will also request to get 2 free rooms that can be raffled for future use or at the silent auction held at the Christmas party. We already paid $1500 deposit and final payment is due a week before the event. December 3, 2010 (final payment due). Committee will also launch a souvenir fundraising program where paid sponsors will be charged accordingly for full or half page ads. $50 or $100? Yo also will solicit printing and artwork sponsors to cover additional advertising for the concert.

Willie requested to extend concert/party hours to after midnight.

DLSAANC budget:

$11,151 less $5000 with about $5,800 left over to pay for the 5 picked charities •	Bagac •	Bro. Donato •	Bro. Ravisa •	Bahay Pag-Asa

•	Benilde for the Deaf

Yo suggested to pick a US charitable institution to remove the shadow of a “pass through”, where donated funds are simply received and donated back to non-registered organizations in the Philippines. The board was asked to research further to be discussed in our next meeting. Irvin added to support any charitable agency in the US that helps the unemployed or maybe create a program that will help La Sallians who are in the same predicament. Irvin will chair this project along with updating our 2010 roster of paid members.

*postpone issuance of payment to all charities and donate remaining $800 to US charitable institution to be named on our next meeting… til Dec.31, 2010…moved by Yo, seconded by CAloy…Unanimous.

Net income $7323.22 (after accrual) less $5800 (Charities), $15,023.22 total…

Yo, Paid $76 license fees for DLSAANC…net of $71 left over.

Tambayan:

Successful meeting last month. Suggest to have it regularly and maybe to keep the same venue, but may sway from over-all goal of supporting local La Sallian owned establishment that promotes membership. Art also suggested to make the Tambayan a fund raising opportunity and ask the restaurant host to donate a portion of the total bill towards DLSAANC, but again, this act will sway us from our goal. Whatever amount lost from a possible fund raising opportunity will be returned 10 fold simply by creating a hospitable and energetic gathering for local La Sallians. Networking is the key! Willie added that attendees make an extra effort to bring guests to the Tambayan..

Bowling:

back burner

Golf tournament:

Fil Am…more info from Orly to be discussed on our next board meeting…

Annual Picnic:

Venue: St. Mary’s College When: July 25, Sunday, from 9am to 4pm, Bro.Dom reserved a place for us…11am mass tentative due to availability of a priest. Emma to inquire about priest…Irvin to create a flyer to send as “save the date.”

Support from Arnold, Yo, Caloy, Irvin, Emma and Peachie…chaired by Willie…

Car raffle:

St. Mary’s earned $50K…increased ticket price from $150 to $250 from last year. Prizes: Jeep liberty or $20K cash and additional prizes, $1000, $500 and smaller gifts. Total expenses, $21,500 + other expenses (printing etc…)Netted $50K…Local businesses were not taken into account. Their contributions would have made their raffle more profitable.

We have to be registered to have a raffle, which we are  Only up to Sept. of 2010, then has to be renewed…plus additional accounting reports is required when holding one. The board agrees that the car raffle or any other raffle is a “money maker”, but due to our audience, the raffle will be scaled down. Emma to spearhead the planning and launching of a raffle project by the end of the year which will be presented to the coming board for next year.

Peachie’s column to be revisited next board meeting:

Note the recent update to our website that describe the charitable institutions we support…Thanks to Orly and Romi.

Motion by Art to fill the board vacancies as stipulated in our ByLaws.

The board decided that due to the amount of time left from the current administration, it will be unfair and useless to appoint or fill the vacant seats. If our goal is to have more heads and helping hands, we can still do so without appointing additional board members. Besides, we already have a full calendar of projects set for 2010, added by Matt. Motion by Willie to shelf the idea, seconded by Caloy…Unanimous.

Review of Bylaws

Willie commissioned Art to spearhead a committee that will include both secretaries and Nani to review the Bylaws. Issues and changes discovered will be shared and voted on by the board prior to the General Assembly, where the board will decide which one and if issues will be presented to the General Assembly for a final vote.

Reaching out to our fellow La Sallians:

Meeting called to order at 8:20 pm

Opening prayer led by our host Caloy.

Agenda:

Approval of (January 12th) Minutes: Approved, but to stipulate that it was a “Special Board Meeting”.

Treasurer’s Report: (Yo) Moving forward we would like to confirm the charities that we are supporting for the year. They are:

•	Bro. Ravisa (Lipa Night School), dollar for dollar, this is the best value for our money. For as little as $100, we are able to support a student in either High School or College level for a year.

• Bahay Pag-Asa, A project we committed through Bro. Gus of a pledge of $10K payable when able.

• Bro. Rafael Donato

• Benilde for the deaf, the ONLY institution in the Philippines that educate students who are deaf.

•	Bagak

In the next 2 years, we would like to focus our fund raising efforts towards supporting the One LaSalle project. Most if not all of the charities mentioned above are in support of One LaSalle. A donation of 20% of our funds to all charities.

Note: Due to our 501C3 status, we have to request all charities we support (unless they hold the same status) a written receipt of acknowledgement of the funds received. Also, in order to be compliant, we have to disclose to all members that a portion of their membership dues is being used to cover the 2 events we hold for the year. They are: •	Annual Picnic

•	General Assembly

In addition, a suggestion to transfer $5K from our general funds (Money Market?) to our operating account.

Checking and Money Market account balances to be provided in the next board meeting.

Motion by Yo, seconded by Orly, Approved!

Projects for 2010:

“A dinner concert with Joey Albert”: To be held at our annual Christmas Party. Chair is Jojo Flores with support from Yo, Arnold, Dino, Irvin, Tom and Matt.

Verify the following: •	Venue 	Round Hill Golf and Country Club: Emma 	Newark Hilton: Orly and Betty already made reservations. Venue can hold from 120 to 500 guests. •	Possible joint project with the “Assumptionistas”

•	Airfare sponsor for Joey Albert

Annual Picnic: St. Mary’s College, Chair is Willie Salgado with support from Irvin, Yo, Peachy, Arnold, Caloy

We would like to commemorate 100 years of LaSalle (Centennial) as a theme in our picnic. Banners and flyers will reflect this motif.

Fil Am golf: Shotgun start at Deer Ridge Country Club, Brentwood, CA on September 18. To be chaired by Matt with support from Arnold, Irvin, Orly and Tom. $100 fee will include buffet (late lunch) for all golfers, $25 for non golfers.

Tambayan Mixer: Monthly social networking to start this month, chaired by Irvin.

Bowling Night: Proposed date is end of October, venue (tba), chaired by Irvin

Other:

It’s been a very frustrating year with numerous attempts by the board to create solidarity, peace and goodwill but even in this last call for a special meeting, we did not get the participation from our elected President. Still, we continue to work as one and gave each member a chance to share their proposal and hopefully come up with a peaceful solution to end all the controversy that’s plaguing the presidency, its board of directors and officers.

These were the suggested proposals:

•	If a resolution is not reached by the majority and still a snap election of officers is on the table, a call for a General Assembly to mediate and elect the entire board and its officers.

•	No election of officers and BOD’s, Secretaries and/or Vice President to moderate all meetings.

•	Remove all BOD’s and officers and to simply create a committee on every project, with the chair to supervise all of his meetings. Get the participation of all members and to reach out to the DLSAANC community.

•	The “Association” need 100% commitment from all in order to successfully move forward. Suggest for anyone to step down and give others a chance to step up, if for any reason you feel that you’re holding back or have any ill feeling in supporting our association.

After a lengthy deliberation, it was proposed and approved to adopt this new procedure moving forward for the remainder of the term for all board of directors and its officers. The new procedure will take into effect until a new set of elected directors and officers deem to do otherwise. The board of directors respects the bylaws in its entirety, but realizes that its function serves only as a guideline and is silent in specific situations that can lead to opposing interpretations.

Effective immediately, “All responsibilities will be removed from the officers with the exception of the Secretary and Treasurer. Board meetings will be held at any board member’s private residence only with the host to moderate and supervise the meeting. The board meeting agenda will be set and distributed in advance of the meeting by the Secretary. The secretaries (Caloy and Irvin) will continue the duties of taking down the minutes and will serve as a mediator if the situation calls for it. The Treasurer will continue to handle all finances. The President and Vice-President will only resume the authority to moderate and supervise the meetings, if it’s held at their own residence.”

The majority has spoken and agreed that this step is the only recourse the board will take moving forward. No other exceptions or changes will be accepted. Take it or leave it! In order to keep the peace and to stop the onslaught of unwarranted criticisms, unfounded accusations, obfuscation of the issues, Arnold put in a motion to rescind an approved December board motion to hold a yearly election of officers . The board voted, Yea=8, Nay=4, Abstain=1.

In addition, due to the unwanted and/or unwarranted emails circulating in the dls-norcal google groups, the board feels that the current moderator cannot effectively and efficiently control and enforce its rules, code of conduct without the help of a committed and a more knowledgeable candidate. The board nominated and approved Peachie to share the responsibilities in moderating the dls-norcal googlegroup emails and hopes that the move will not only minimize unsolicited emails, but increase over all cheerfulness, discipline and respect within the group. Acting from a motion from Yo, seconded by Nani…Board uNani-mously Approved!

Tom submitted his resignation…board accepted, but left an “open invitation”, if his decision changes moving forward. Personal note from Peachy, “You are the PILLARS of our association, and the younger generation needs a good foundation so that we can accomplish with excellence the mission of our Association.”

Special Meeting adjourned @ 10:42 pm

Irvin Sevilla

Co-Secretary

Approved by the Board of Directors on April 6th, 2010 via email

Nov. 4, 2010 – Manny “Nogy” Noguera won his second consecutive and third over-all Golfer-of-the-Year Award at the conclusion of this year’s DLS Greens Tour at the October tournament held at Santa Clara Golf and Tennis Club.

Manny scored a clutch 81 gross and 6-under par net 66 to overtake erstwhile GOY leader Bobby Panlasigue for the year’s title. Bobby, who scored an impressive gross 87 and net 69 at the same tournament, was leading Manny by 10 GOY points at the start of the October tournament after winning the penultimate tournament at Deer Ridge Golf Club in Brentwood.

The organizers shook up the GOY points this year by awarding more points to the Top 5 net scorers of the tournament regardless of (Masters and Classics) division. The tournament winner gets 150 points while the next top four placers are awarded descending points in increments of 20. Per previous practice, tournament participants automatically earn 50 points. In previous years, the tournament winner was awarded 100 GOY points and the next top four finishers were awarded descending points in increments of 10.

Manny was one of only four DLS Greens golfers who participated in all of the eight tournaments held this year. The 100% participation served him well since his closest pursuers missed 1 or 2 of the year’s tournaments. Bobby missed the July tournament in Crystal Springs Golf Club while third-placerIrvin Sevilla missed consecutive tournaments last summer at Poppy Hills and Palo Alto Golf Clubs. The GOY award was well-deserved nevertheless since Manny either won or placed in the Top 5 in four of the year’s eight tournaments. Monching Dumancas and Clem Yu rounded-up the Top 5 for this year’s GOY standings.

The tournament-by-tournament and cumulative results:

Nov. 5, 2010 – Froi Lomotan and Joji Mercado won the Masters and Classics division, respectively, at the last tournament of the year held on Oct. 16 at the Santa Clara Golf and Tennis Club. The twenty-six DLS Greens (and guest golfers) who participated in the tournament enjoyed the peninsula’s mild autumn weather as well as the camaraderie of fellow alumni. They used the gold tees (6,420 yards, 116 slope rating) of the well-maintained municipal golf course of Santa Clara county.

Foursomes were tweaked at the tournament to group the leading DLS Greens Golfer of the Year (GOY) contenders as the last foursome. It provided an interesting sideshow as the Top 2 golfers, Bobby Panlasigue and Manny Noguera, battled it out until the last hole. Both scored impressively: Manny had a gross 81 (net 66) and Bobby had a gross 87 (net 69). At the end, Manny prevailed by garnering the tournament’s third best net score to get 110 GOY points. Bobby figured in a 3-way tie for net 69 and ended up with just 50 GOY points when the tie-breaker went in favor of Tony Colmenares andJim Feyzbakhsh, who then got the 2nd and 3rd place finish for the Classics division. Manny Noguera placed third in the Masters Division behind runner-up Tom Consunji.

Closest to the pin bragging rights went to Rico Medina and Bobby Panlasigue.

To Take a Stand

By Oscar P. Lagman, Jr.

Cheer, Cheer For Old De La Salle

As the boys used to sing during the NCAA basketball games in the 1930s to the 1960s, cheer, cheer for Old De La Salle. The school celebrates its centennial anniversary this year. It was on June 16, 1911, when the first Christian Brothers school in the Philippines opened it its doors. Centennial celebrations were kicked off last Tuesday.

Shortly after American rule had been established in the Philippine islands, President William McKinley instructed the military authorities to make English the official language of the islands, and therefore the medium of instruction in all public schools. In 1899 he told a group of Methodist ministers who had called on him, “there was nothing left for us to do but to educate the Filipinos, and uplift and civilize and Christianize them.”

With McKinley’s blessings, Protestant ministers left for the Philippines with missionary zeal. The Presbyterians opened in Dumaguete an elementary school for boys, Silliman Institute, the first American private school in the country. The Episcopalians established Brent School in Baguio. Back in 1901, 540 American teachers, almost all Protestants, disembarked from the USS Thomas at the mouth of the Pasig River, and went to different parts of the country to man the public schools.

At about that time, there were about 31 private schools in Manila, including the San Juan de Letran College and the University of Santo Tomas run by the Dominicans, the Ateneo of the Jesuits, and the schools for girls conducted by nuns. But the medium of instruction in all these schools was Spanish.

The American archbishop of Manila, Jeremiah Harty, had just replaced the last Spanish archbishop, who hastily went back to his native Spain in fear of his Filipino flock for opposing the revolution in1898. Archbishop Harty feared that the Catholic faith was being eroded by the influence of the Protestant missionaries who were fast gaining control of the educational system. He felt that only new educational centers superior to those controlled by American Protestants could arrest the erosion.

Intimately familiar with the Christian Brothers brand of Catholic education, being an alumnus of the Christian Brothers College in St. Louis, he wanted a school staffed by American Christian Brothers. Thus, he wrote the Brothers inviting them to open a school in Manila.

But from the time of John Baptist de la Salle, the founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, the Brothers opening a school in a new territory depended on the local civil or ecclesiastical authorities financing the purchase of a suitable site and paying for the upkeep of the teachers.

John the Baptist de la Salle was the eldest of seven surviving children born to a wealthy and landed family in the city of Rheims, France. He was ordained a priest in 1678. With Adrian Nyel, a zealous schoolmaster well known for establishing schools for poor girls, de la Salle opened new schools for poor children. Discerning God’s call for him to create with his teachers a new kind of school that would make quality human and Christian education accessible to the poor, he formed the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools.

In 1691, fearing the collapse of the institute due to lack of resources, de la Salle and two Brothers made a sacred vow to keep the society and the work alive even if they have to live on bread and water alone. But soon after, more men became inspired by the example of de la Salle and his Brothers. They joined the Institute and together they opened more schools for poor children.

Because of their teaching method, their schools became famous all over Europe, leading local governments to invite the Brothers to open schools in their territory, assuring them subsidy and aid of the diocese and local benefactors. The American civil government in the Philippines, however, was not inclined to subsidize private schools such as what Harty wanted.

Harty offered to finance the establishment of a school including dormitories, and possibly a free school and orphanage if the Brothers insisted on being true to the mission of St. de la Salle and the Institute of the Christian Brothers. In his tour of the United States, he was able to obtain pledges of financial support from American Catholics. He went to Rome to tell the Pope how important it was for a Catholic school run by English-speaking teachers to be established in Manila. Convinced, the Pope asked the Superior General of the Brothers to set up a school in Manila.

Acceding to the wish of the Pope, Brother Adolphe Alfred, director of a large school in Barcelona, sailed for Manila to meet with Archbishop Harty for the purpose of establishing a Brothers school in Manila. Upon his arrival in Manila, the archbishop took Brother Adolphe around to look for a possible site of the school. They agreed that a site in Paco, formerly occupied by the American School, would make a suitable location. Harty entered into a contract by which he would pay P20,000 down, and P10,000 annually for the next five years at an interest rate of eight percent per annum. Another P16,000 was spent to spruce up the place in time for school opening in June.

De La Salle school opened on June 16, 1911, with nine Brothers forming the faculty. Only one of them was American, three Irish, and five French who spoke English. The school drew the sons of well-to-do families not only in Manila but in the provinces as their parents wanted the children to learn English, the emerging language of formal communication. For that reason most of the first students were rich Spanish mestizos, as were most of the students in the next three decades. Thus, the elitist image of the school, an image not shared, however, by most of the Christian Brothers schools in over 80 countries.

In a solemn ceremony at the Christian Brothers’ private chapel on their fourth floor residence in the main De La Salle University building on Taft Avenue last Saturday, alumnus Eduardo (Danding) Cojuangco Jr. was recognized as a La Sallian Master for his “invaluable contributions to Philippine industry, management, education and corporate citizenship.”

The exquisite glass plaque symbolic of the La Sallian Master award presented to Cojuangco by La Salle president Br. Narciso Erguiza and chancellor Br. Ricardo Laguda described him as a “distinguished businessman, philanthropist and sports advocate.”

The word Master is an acronym for “Mavens, Stewards, Trailblazers and Entrepreneurs Resource.” La Salle launched the award last June. The objective of the recognition is to honor La Salle alumni who have excelled in their chosen field and remained faithful to the La Sallian credo of “achievers for God and country.”

What made the awarding extra special was it was done privately, without fanfare. Only the Christian Brothers and Cojuangco’s family and close friends attended. A Holy Mass preceded the awarding which was held in the small chapel with a seating capacity of about 50. The solemnity of the gathering was accentuated by the exposition of a holy relic of St. John Baptist de La Salle, a bone encased in a glass repository flown in from overseas for the school’s centennial celebration next year.

The Christian Brothers who attended the ceremony were Br. Edgar Nicodem, Br. Victor Franco, Br. Benildo Feliciano, Secretary of Education Br. Armin Luistro, Br. Erguiza, Br. Laguda, Br. Bernie Oca, Br. Michael Broughton, Br. Rolly Dizon, Br. Gus Boquer, Br. Joseph Scheiter and Br. Crisanto Moreno. Cojuangco’s family was represented by his wife Gretchen, son Mark and wife Kimi, son Charlie, brother Henry, son-in-law Dr. Nick Cruz and grandchildren Paola, Santi, Sophie, Jaime and Claudia. Among his friends who came were Fr. Fernando Suarez, Mila Puyat, former Secretary of Finance Titoy Pardo, Tammy Campos, Sylvia Heras and Miguel Puyat.

Cojuangco entered La Salle as a kindergarten student in 1940, fondly remembering Juan Medrano as his first teacher. When World War II broke out the next year, Cojuangco went from school to school as his father, Eduardo Sr., then Tarlac Governor, was constantly on the move, evading the Japanese, staying only three months at a time in different homes. The family even reached Baguio where Cojuangco attended classes at St. Louis.

Because of the family’s movements, Cojuangco attended several schools during his elementary days, including La Concordia, Sta. Ana parochial and the Paniqui public school. Later, he reflected that the experience left a lasting impression in his mind as he cherished the memory of going to school with the less fortunate. It gave him the inspiration to establish a foundation which today, provides scholarships to thousands of college students and public school teachers pursuing Masteral and doctorate degrees.

Eventually, Cojuangco returned to La Salle where he graduated from high school in 1952. One of his mentors was Horacio Cebrero, later La Salle high school principal. After graduating at La Salle, he enrolled at UP Los Baños and completed his tertiary education at California Polytechnic College in San Luis Obispo.

La Salle will always have a special place in Cojuangco’s heart. He recalled being an acolyte and a member of the Junior Police conducting traffic on Taft Avenue. He recalled memorable moments with Brs. Athenaesius, Dennis and William and going on retreat at the La Salle house in Baguio. His brother Henry, now a Tarlac congressman, played for the La Salle juniors in the NCAA and another brother Manoling earned a college degree in Taft.

Cojuangco followed in his father’s footsteps and became Tarlac Governor. He also was a congressman of the first district of Tarlac. Today, he is the chairman and chief executive officer of San Miguel Corp., the largest food and beverage conglomerate in Southeast Asia.

Cojuangco was awarded the Legion of Honor by the Philippine government and dubbed Knight of the Order of St. Sylvester by the Vatican. He has also received honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Mindanao, Tarlac College of Agriculture and the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos.
